About
The Broad's moved to Devon in the Millennium year and I fell in love with living so close to the sea and enjoying the incredible countryside down here. After going to the University of Exeter to gain my degree and then PGCE, I made my first big move outside the county to... Surrey! You could not get much closer to Devon in terms of the scenery and although the seaside is that much further away, London became the place to be and explore. With Matthew, my boyfriend, living and working there as well as many friends, there were ample opportunities to start living outside of my Devon bubble.
A few years later when the subject first arose of moving abroad to work and teach, it was never going to be an easy decision to make. Matthew and I went over the pros and cons for weeks, but could not get the feeling of regret out of our minds if we did not go for it. The daily conversations I have with students often include the phrases ''make the most of every opportunity...challenge yourself...move out of your comfort zone''. So I decided to take my own advice and do something I would never thought I would have the confidence to do, which was to live and work outside of the UK.
We accepted the jobs at The British School of Guangzhou in January and we fly out with a suitcase to our name on August 5th 2017! Matthew and I have been together for over five years before starting this adventure together and I feel so lucky to be able to share this experience with him.
Here, starting to write this blog a few days before we leave, I hope this can be a platform for family and friends to share our experiences and to give an insight into the reality of teaching and living in China. It certainly is going to be as far from Devon and Surrey as I can imagine and I am excited to embrace the change in culture, climate and lifestyle!
